Independent Reading
Our goal in independent reading is to expose students to rich and varied reading opportunities by helping them set individual goals for their volume of reading. Students will be responsible for choosing books that interest them, and will show their progress toward their goals through conferring with the teacher, writing reading responses, and sharing ideas for books with their peers.
This approach to independent reading shows adolescents that it is their responsibility to manage their time and to read on their own for extended periods. It recognizes that students and their families keep busy schedules and that not every night allows for extended periods of reading. Yet, the goals have been set to be achieved. Teachers will provide time and space within the day for students to work toward their goals and parents/guardians can continue to provide the time and the space for their students to continue their self-selected reading at home.
